One difficult thing about working on The Venture Bros is trying to describe the show to friends and family who haven’t seen it.
Summarizing the premise is easy enough, something along the lines of “Remember Jonny Quest? OK, this is what would happen if he grew up to be a really shitty father and forced his kids to go through the same childhood he did.”
What’s actually challenging is attempting to convey the increasing complexity of the characters’ development and relationships, which for me is what makes the show so good. For the viewer, it began with a simple enough idea, one largely based on satirical homage, but has since developed its own engrossing and truly unique dramatic universe.
It isn’t simply an “adult cartoon show”. It is rich, layered, and unlike most comedy programs you really do need to watch it from the beginning to appreciate what’s coming in the new season.
This is why I was happy to find out adult swim is providing 2 easily digestible information items for people who either haven’t watched the show before, or have forgotten everything in the 2 years since season 4.
Now I have a way for my relatives and friends to be able to share in the work I am so very proud of. And everyone can look forward to an amazing new season of what I consider to be one of the best shows ever.
